What comes to mind when you think of a summer jam? Please don’t say Summer by Calvin Harris (although to be fair, it truly was a summer jam). We’ve got a couple hits in mind for this summer’s anthem, one of which is by a rising Italian duo, Bout. The first time we heard their single Gone Away, we were on our rooftop, drinking Coronas and exclaiming how not San Francisco the weather was. Fast forward a month and we’re still obsessed with Gone Away, and we got them on to 60 Questions! Not to spoil the article, but they’ve been kicked out of a club for not wearing trousers and one of them really likes toast. Please welcome Andrea and Stef of Bout!
What’s up guys! Pumped to have you on 60 Questions this week.
Stef: Us too! Thanks for having us.
Let’s dive right in. Where are you guys currently?
Andrea: A town called Bergamo. It’s really close to Milan, but much better.
Very cool. What makes it better than Milan?
Andrea: You can find whatever you want here. It’s a big city like Milan but if you want to chill there are a lot of parks and quiet places where you can go too. We think everyone should come and visit at least once in their lifetime.
Where’s your favorite bar/club in Bergamo?
Stef: Hmmmm… we don’t have a favorite club to be honest. We just follow our favorite artists when they’re in town or somewhere nearby.
Makes sense. Where did you guys come up with the name Bout?
Andrea: That’s kind of funny. We were trying to find a name that would really tell people about us and literally got “about us” stuck in our heads. It seemed a bit too long/generic, so we decided to just go with Bout.
When/how did you guys meet?
Stef: It was something like 4 years ago- I was a student in a music production school in Milan and Andrea was teaching there.
Andrea: Yeah, we immediately found out we had a lot of things in common and almost the same taste in music. We began working together on projects a little less than two years ago, and the rest is history.
That's awesome. How would you guys describe your sound?
Andrea: Funky, melodic, groovy. Oh and radio friendly.
Agreed! We love Gone Away. What was your inspiration for it?
Andrea: Well, it all began with our single A Better Soul.
Stef: We wanted to try something really different from the usual EDM stuff, and the results were astonishing. A Better Soul got more than 2 Million streams on Spotify and support from a ton of big name DJs- Nicky Romero, Don Diablo, etc.
Andrea: We thought, wow, that worked really well, so we decided to work on a follow up song with a similar sound. After some time in the studio we came up with a cool instrumental, but it was still missing something.
Stef: A couple days later we received an amazing acapella from Mike James and it was love at first listen. It almost seemed like fate!
It’s great when things come together like that. Any upcoming tracks you could give us a sneak peak on?
Stef: We’ve just released a super funky track on Protocol Recordings with our Italian buddies Maximals and Sovth called Fall In Line- you should check it out! We also have a lot of big projects coming up that we have to keep under wraps for the moment. But stay tuned…
Fair enough. What’s one thing you have to have with you on set?
Andrea: Water- and lots of it! DJing is surprisingly great exercise.
Stef: Yeah we never drink during our sets, but once we finish a few beers or shots are allowed haha.
Seems reasonable to me! What were your first jobs?
Stef: We’re both lucky in that we really haven’t had any jobs besides making music. We currently own a studio in Milan called MEP Studio, which has been a dream come true.
Andrea: Yeah, I was a classical pianist touring around Europe then started producing as soon as I finished my studies.
Did you have any pets growing up?
Stef: I love dogs! I used to have a Westie when I was a kid- so much fun.
Andrea: No, but I now have a Labrador called Siegfried- he’s the best.
Who was your favorite musician growing up?
Stef: Simple Plan.
Did you play any instruments growing up?
Stef: I’m a self-taught guitarist.
Andrea: Piano- which I actually got a degree in.
What’s your favorite saying in Italian?
Stef: Chi dorme non piglia pesci. It means “who does nothing will not get anything”.
Andrea: È inutile piangere sul latte versato, which means “it’s useless to cry over what you have done if you cannot change it”.
Both great sayings. What song gets you turnt in the club?
Stef: Haha definitely the Don Diablo remix of Something Just Like This.
Andrea: I’m going to go with the Mercer remix of Propaganda by DJ Snake.
Both great tracks. Ok, the next 5 questions are a game we call Hot and Cool. Basically, you have to decide whether you would date this person who’s super hot and super cool, but they have a weird condition.
Stef: We’re ready!
Alright, so hot and cool, but they put peanut butter on everything they eat.
Andrea: I don’t think so, not a big fan of peanut butter.
Hot and cool, but whenever they see street signs they have to read them out loud.
Stef: Haha no.
Hot and cool, but they sing a Beyonce song every morning when they wake up.
Stef: Only if she’s a good singer?
Andrea: Absolutely no.
Hot and cool, but their brother is in the Mafia.
Andrea: We are Italian! Everyone is in the Mafia here.
I'll keep that in mind! Ok last one, hot and cool, but they bring a toaster oven with them wherever they go.
Stef: Haha how do you even think about something like that? No!
Andrea: I mean I like toast, so yes!
Sounds like a perfect date! Alright, back to normal questions. Who’s your celebrity crush?
Stef: Alexis Ren.
Andrea: Jennifer Aniston.
Great choices. What's the most romantic thing you’ve ever done for someone?
Stef: Hmmm… I’m going to go with driving my bike in the middle of the night while it was snowing for 30 kilometers just to say I was sorry.
Andrea: I recently bought 100 red roses for my girlfriend, she liked it.
Well done! Do you remember where your first kiss was?
Stef: I was 12 and it was in Sicily... I think?
Andrea: It was the day after Christmas- we were skiing and I got a kiss on the chair lift.
Wow that’s pretty unique! Where’s your favorite place to vacation?
Stef: Big cities in the summer and the mountains during the winter.
Andrea: The seaside.
What’s your favorite Italian food?
Stef: All of it!
Andrea: I think pizza.
What’s a show you have coming up soon you’re super stoked about?
Andrea: Well we have something big happening in October, but can’t reveal anything at the moment…
Sounds exciting! What’s your go to drink?
Andrea: Gin and tonic.
Can you guys cook?
Stef: Sure, anything with chicken in it.
Andrea: Yes- I make a killer risotto.
You’re making me hungry. Ok, you’re stuck on an island. What three things must you have?
Stef: My MacBook, a soccer ball, and some cold beer.
Andrea: I’ll go with my computer, headphones, and an internet connection.
Makes sense. Besides music, what’s another hobby you’re really into?
Stef: Well soccer, but also I’m really into fashion and new technology.
Andrea: Yeah new technology for me too, but also cooking and personal finance.
What gets you the most excited in life?
Stef: Playing music! And it doesn’t matter where, I get just as excited playing at small venues as I do big ones.
Andrea: Yeah same.
Ok, this section is called this or that. We’re going to ask you which of two things you like more. Ready?
Andrea: Let’s do it.
Cool. Shark or Dolphin?
Pasta or pizza?
Vacuum your room or do your laundry?
Andrea: Do my laundry.
Whiskey or Tequila?
Andrea: Definitely tequila.
Ferrari or Lamborghini?
Rock climbing or whitewater rafting?
Stef: Rock climbing.
Andrea: Yeah rock climbing.
Will Ferrell or Steve Carell?
Stef: Will Ferrel
Indiana Jones or Han Solo?
Stef: Why not San Holo? He’s awesome.
Andrea: Haha Indiana Jones.
Early or Late?
Whipped cream or chocolate syrup?
Stef: Chocolate syrup, any day.
Andrea: Yeah chocolate syrup.
Well done. Back to normal questions- who do you look up to the most in the music industry?
Stef: One of our idols is Mr. Don Diablo for sure. He’s so good.
Totally, we’re obsessed. If you couldn’t be a musician, what would you be?
Stef: Ummm nothing else!
Andrea: Don’t even want to think about it.
Do you write the lyrics for your songs?
Andrea: Not currently, but we are working on it. Maybe one day you’ll listen to one of our new tracks and we’ll be singing on it!
What are you super interested in that most people haven’t heard of?
Stef: We’re both really into crypto-currencies. Most people are skeptical, but we think they will be the future for sure.
Interesting. What’s the best thing you got from your parents?
Stef: They gave me so much, but I think my first MacBook. I’m not sure I would have started producing without it!
Andrea: My first piano when I was 5 years old.
Is there anything you regret not doing?
Stef: Not starting Bout sooner!
When do you sleep the best at night?
Andrea: When it’s raining outside, so nice.
What’s one habit you wish you could break?
Stef: Being super lazy sometimes haha.
Andrea: Waking up later than I should.
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Stef: Hmmm… well earlier this summer, we were about to get in a club but the bodyguard told us we weren’t allowed in because we were wearing t-shirts and shorts instead of button down shirts and trousers.
Andrea: Haha yeah so we decided we would try and get in through the back by jumping the fence to the patio. We made it over, but one of the bodyguards saw us so we ran all the way through the club and back out the front entrance. But we escaped without getting caught!
That’s hilarious. What’s a guilty pleasure you guys have?
Stef: Biscuits and cakes, yum.
Andrea: I’m going to go with sleeping in all morning.
If you could grab a coffee with any historical figure, who would it be?
Andrea: Steve Jobs for sure, he changed the world and probably our futures.
If you could grab a cocktail with any historical figure, who would it be?
Stef: Oscar Wilde and Salvador Dali- but we bet they are better drinkers than us haha.
Ok, only a few more. What’s the coolest party you’ve ever been to?
Stef: That’s hard, but I think the OWSLA private party at Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) 2015 was really sick. It was pretty intimate but had a massive line to get in. Oh and Rihanna was on the dance floor. What more can you ask for than that?
Andrea: I'd have to go with the label parties during the Winter Music Conference in Miami. Those parties are always freaking crazy.
Where do you see yourselves in 1 year?
Andrea: Touring around Europe and Asia, hopefully.
Where do you see yourselves in 10 years?
Stef: I think that’s too many years to make any plan, we prefer living more day to day.
Fair enough. What’s your favorite music festival?
Stef: Ultra Music Festival Miami for sure.
It's one of our favorites as well. Last one! What’s the best advice you've gotten in life?
Andrea: Do what you love, love what you do.
