When we come up with the list of questions that make up a 60 Questions interview, we try to come up with questions that give us insight into what the artist is like as a person. Sure, there’s some “which condiment is your favorite” types of questions, but a lot of our questions take time to answer. One that tends to stump artists the most is asking them to describe their sound in one word. When we asked Jonas Aden what his sound was, he just replied “Weird. I always come back to weird”. Since we think that weird is the new cool, we love that. We also learned that he likes country music, and cares about the environment. Without further adieu, please welcome Jonas Aden!
Hey, Jonas! Thanks again for interviewing with us, I think our readers are going to be super stoked to learn more about you!
Jonas: No problem! Thank you for having me.
Let’s get started. How are you doing today?
Jonas: I’m good! I just got to my studio to produce and stepped out really quick to talk to you!
Awesome. Happy belated birthday by the way! Did you do anything special?
Jonas: Thank you! Appreciate it. I was actually planning on working the entire day, but my friends that I share a studio with planned a surprise party for me! So there was no work involved after like 8 PM haha.
Sounds fun! Where are you by the way?
Jonas: Oslo, Norway.
Very cool, one of our teammates has family in Bergen- he’s always going on about it. What’s your favorite thing about Norway?
Jonas: I’m going to go with the abundance nature we have here. You can basically travel 10 minutes just outside the center of Oslo, and you’ll see beautiful lakes and forests. It’s so peaceful and amazing.
Awesome, sounds beautiful. Did you grow up in Oslo?
Jonas: Close- I grew up in a suburb about a half hour outside Oslo. But now that I have my studio in the city, I spend most of my time here.
Makes sense. Do you have any siblings?
Jonas: I have a younger sister! She’s studying in Australia. She’s been there for a couple years now. I’m pretty jealous haha.
Me too! What’s your favorite memory from your childhood?
Jonas: Hmmm probably something music related. My father is really good at playing the piano, and every weekend my sister and I would dance while he played. I remember that fondly.
Very cool- sounds like you have a musical family! What’s the best piece of advice your parents have ever given you?
Jonas: Definitely to keep your head down and work hard for the things you want. Don’t mind what anyone else is doing, and do what you feel is you. Eventually you will succeed.
That’s good advice. When did you start first making music?
Jonas: I started playing piano at a pretty young age. I enjoyed it, but not as much as I thought I would. I wanted to be able to compose bigger pieces and have control over everything. Eventually, I started playing around in a friends studio when I was 12, and started getting more serious about producing when I was 15.
That’s young! Okay, this is a hard one. If you had to describe your style in one word what would it be?
Jonas: Haha that is a hard question! Hmmm, can I go with weird? I always try to do something different with my music. Weird is interesting in my book.
Weird is great! Any upcoming tracks that you’re super stoked about?
Jonas: Yeah! Alan Walker just played one of my unreleased songs at Tomorrowland a couple weeks ago which is coming out soon. I can’t tell you when or where but I’m super stoked about it and I like it a lot.
We can’t wait. Switching gears a little bit, what’s a cause that you really care about?
Jonas: I’m really interested in environmental issues. It speaks to me- maybe because I live somewhere that has beautiful nature all around it? Without the environment we’re seriously fucked so that’s where I try and put my focus. I try to donate to foundations and do local work to support the cause.
That’s great, we can’t agree more. What was your first job?
Jonas: My first job was actually a tennis trainer! I used to train younger kids at tennis practice. Every time I trained them I got a little bit better myself too.
That works out well haha. Who was your favorite musician growing up?
Jonas: Definitely Paul Simon, by far.
Good choice. What song gets you turnt at the club?
Jonas: Ah that’s hard. I feel like it’s different every day. But if I had to pick one, it would be Knife Party’s track Internet Friends. I’ve always loved that track and it’s one of the tracks that inspired me to take my production to a new level. It’s just a track that’s close to my heart. And it’s a little weird haha.
It is a little weird! but it’s also a sick song. Are there any upcoming gigs that you’re super pumped about?
Jonas: I’m super excited about my upcoming club shows around Europe. Those are always really fun
Alright, so this part of the interview is called Hot and Cool. You know the drill- you have to decide whether you would date this person who’s super hot and super cool, but they have a weird condition.
Jonas: Okay, I think I understand haha.
Okay so the first one: Hot and cool but they will only listen to country music
Jonas: Totally! I actually enjoy country music.
Yeah, it’s not the worst. Next one: hot and cool, but they’re obsessed with gardening.
Jonas: Gardening? Oh, definitely! That’s a big yes- remember, I love nature.
Fair enough. Hot and cool but they make you eat Lutefisk for dinner every night.
Jonas: Oh hell no. That seriously makes me want to puke.
Haha yeah that stuff looks gross. Hot and cool, but they have to sleep on the floor.
Jonas: Yeah that’s fine with me! As long as they don’t expect me to join them down there haha.
Last one, hot and cool but you have to have a beard when you’re with them.
Jonas: Dude these were easy, I already have a beard. So yes!
Haha you got off easy this time. Back to normal questions. Where is your favorite place to vacation?
Jonas: Probably France. We have family there, and I know the language.
How many languages do you speak?
Jonas: Just three; Norwegian, English and French.
Just three? That’s legit! Can you remember where your first date was?
Jonas: My first date… I think it was at the movies. We watched some kids movie, I can’t really remember. I wasn’t really focusing on the movie haha.
There you go! Can you remember where your first kiss was?
Jonas: Yeah, we were playing truth or dare. Romantic, I know.
Haha typical. What’s your favorite fast food?
What’s your go-to drink?
Jonas: Water. I don’t know why, but really cold water is my thing.
Definitely the healthiest drink! What do you do to relax?
Jonas: Usually I just lie down and try to think about nothing. My mind is always on a bunch of different things, so clearing my thoughts every once and while really helps.
Makes sense. What’s your favorite sports team?
Jonas: I’m going to go with Manchester United.
What kind of people do you like to surround yourself with?
Jonas: People who know what they want and are willing to work for it. I’m not about laziness.
Totally. Which country has the craziest fans?
Jonas: So far, the Czech Republic. I played there two weeks ago and they were nuts. So much energy.
I’ve heard they’re crazy. What’s your favorite venue to play at?
Jonas: Definitely outdoor festivals. Everyone’s so positive and enjoying life. Summer Festival in Belgium is one that stands out to me. I played there last year- it was a blast.
Awesome. Ok, this next section is called This or That. I’ll give you two things and you decide which one you like more.
Jonas: Let’s do it.
Orange Juice or Coffee?
Jonas: Coffee! because it wakes me up.
Go on a hike or grab a drink?
Pool or Ocean?
Xbox or Playstation?
Jonas: Hmmm… Playstation.
Study or skip class?
Miami or Barcelona?
Blazer or Tank Top?
Summer or Winter?
Jonas: Summer for sure.
Penthouse or Mansion?
Read a book or watch a movie?
Jonas: Read a book.
Last one, Darth Vader or Voldemort?
Jonas: Haha Darth Vader!
Well done! Who do you look up to most in the music industry?
Jonas: Calvin Harris is my number one right now. He’s so good at what he does and he’s been grinding at it for so long. He worked at a supermarket and now look where he is! He’s such a hard working and extremely talented dude.
Fair enough. Who’s your celebrity crush?
Jonas: Josephine Skriver! The Victoria's Secret Model. She’s so hot.
Can’t disagree with you there! Is there anything that you’re super interested in that most people haven’t heard of?
Jonas: Probably synthesizing. Most people don’t know what it is- but I’m super into it. In case you were wondering it’s developing new sounds for my music.
Probably developing weird sounds, right? Haha what do you say more in life, yes or no?
Jonas: Yes, and way too much actually. It’s because I want to give as much as I can. Which causes me to over extend myself and miss deadlines haha. Oh well.
It’s hard to not say yes sometimes! What’s the best thing your parents have taught you?
Jonas: Opportunity, and how to love and forgive.
That’s great. When do you feel the most confident?
Jonas: When I’m in my studio. If I make something that's shit, I know I can work on it and make it into something that’s good. It all resolves itself eventually, and I’m confident in that process.
When do you feel the most creative?
Jonas: When I’ve been out touring and come back to the studio. It’s an awesome feeling to come back with new experiences, sounds, and relationships. It’s fantastic.
What’s your favorite emoji?
Jonas: Probably the heart one. I use it way too much, but you have to share your love with people!
True that. What is your favorite song to sing in the shower?
Jonas: Probably a Rihanna song like Pon De Replay haha.
Great shower singing song. What’s one bad habit that you wish you could break?
Jonas: Not being able to fully relax because there’s always something I could be working on. I’ve always had trouble with that.
I think we all do that a bit. What’s the craziest party you’ve ever been to?
Jonas: The parties in Miami last Spring. Such a crazy vibe- people from Miami know how to party.
I’ve heard that haha. Who’s someone you miss having in your life?
Jonas: I definitely miss some of my old friends. We all just live in different parts of the world and it sucks not being able to keep up with everyone.
I feel you. What’s your biggest pet peeve with modern technology?
Jonas: My computer- just in general. It’s always crashing at the worst times! So annoying.
I can’t agree more. Where do you see yourself in one year?
Jonas: Hopefully as a more developed artist all around- it’s my main focus right now. In one year I want to be a better producer, songwriter and musician. Shouldn’t be too hard, right?
You got this! Alright, last one. What part or being a musician or DJ excited you the most?
Jonas: I think playing your music that you worked so hard on to produce, then seeing people's reactions. That is the best feeling in the world!
I can only imagine man. That’s it! Thank you so much.
Jonas: Of course, and thank you!
